Like the British that brought and bought him, the African is an organic and indigenous part of Southern culture and it is high time that we all look at our shared history with a bit more honesty and calm, remembering it all, but choosing to reflect upon and celebrate that which has made the South like that bowl of chili that burns your mouth so, but that you cant stop eating.

My husband reads pretty much exclusively mysteries, and he particularly loves the vintage ones. I don't read alot of them, but I've always wanted to try Mary Roberts Rinehart; this sounds like a good one to start with.
Thanks for your great review 🙂

Book Girl, I hope you enjoy it! Mary is one of my favorites! Who is your husband's favorite vintage writer?

I don't know this author and this sounds like a fascinating story! I love it when there are lots of suspects with good (?) motives for murder and I actually prefer NOT to work it out. I like a surprise at the end! If I've worked it out for myself, it counts as a failure for the book, as far as I'm concerned!
At first I didn't realise you were American, so when you said the nightwatchman's 'pants' were missing, I wondered how he'd lost his underwear. 🙂 Of course, you meant what we in Scotland call 'trousers'! 🙂
How lovely to find such a great link with one of your favourite places! Thanks for a very interesting review.
